Church presents ‘The Laramie Project’

THE UGLINESS OF HOMOPHOBIA–Actors and actresses will present “The Laramie Project,” a dramatic look at the murder of an openly gay student, 21, who attended the University of Wyoming. The homicide occurred 11 years ago. The play is coming to Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Newbury Park. The Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will present a production of the play “The Laramie Project” at 8 p.m. Fri. and Sat., Nov. 6 and 7 in the fellowship’s sanctuary, 3327 Old Conejo Road, Newbury Park.

The play is a dramatic look at the killing of 21-year-old Matthew Shepard, an openly gay student at the University of Wyoming, who was kidnapped, tied to a fence, beaten and left to die in the town of Laramie.

The drama will be presented a few weeks after the 11th anniversary of Shepard’s death.

The play was developed by Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project in Colorado, who visited Laramie after Shepard’s death and during the trial of his assailants. The actors conducted more than 200 interviews with townspeople.
