•Army Pfc. Matthew B. Merkle has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.
He is the son of Gary and Karen Merkle of Westlake Village and a 2004 graduate of Westlake High School.
•Air National Guard Airman Blake A. Candreva graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
He is the son of Misti Candreva-Martin of Reno, Nev., and Jeff Candreva of Westlake Village.
Candreva graduated in 2003 from Galena High School and received an associate degree in 2009 from Truckee Meadows Community College, both in Reno.
•Navy Lt. Cmdr. Michael P. Smith, along with fellow sailors, soldiers, airmen and civil service mariners, returned from a deployment while assigned to the dry cargo/ammunition ship USNS Richard E. Byrd, San Diego, forward operating in Guam.
Byrd departed Guam for Oceania outfitted with humanitarian civic assistance supplies and a contingent of medical personnel, veterinarians, medical and dental teams and engineers.
Pacific Partnership is an annual U.S. Pacific Fleet-sponsored training and readiness mission that provides humanitarian assistance.
Byrd’s crew visited the countries of Kiribati, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, the Solomon Islands and Tonga.
While in each country, the crew worked with the host nation to provide medical care and to repair buildings and water systems.
Smith joined the Navy in June 1997. He is the son of Kathleen Smith of Tillamook, Ore., and Michael Smith of Westlake Village.
