Price convicted of murder
      Kenneth Price, 40, has been convicted by a jury for the July 26, 2008, first-degree murder of his mother, Newbury Park resident Linda Price. Price was also found guilty of committing the murder during a robbery. Because the victim was 67 years old at the time of the murder, the jury found Price guilty of elder abuse causing death.

Veterans Day will not affect trash collection next week

Seniors get the spotlight in Thousand Oaks
     The Council on Aging (COA), an advisory body of the T.O. City Council, presented a Senior Adult Master Plan that was unanimously received by the council. During their Oct. 13 meeting, council members heard the result of COA’s survey of 5,000 seniors. The survey was taken to assess the needs of Conejo Valley seniors so the city can prepare for future needs.

T.O. man commits suicide
On Monday, victim had been distraught
      A Thousand Oaks man committed suicide Tuesday near Camarillo, authorities said. Deputies found Bruce Czernek, 50, in a burning parked car at 1:30 a.m., Tues., Nov. 3 on Fifth Street, one-half mile south of Pleasant Valley Road, in an unincorporated area of Ventura County just outside Camarillo, said Sgt. Dave Murray of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

      Jerry Lewi of Thousand Oaks was awarded the Angelo Rolando award from the California Grand Jurors’ Association at the group’s annual conference at Sacramento in October.

Amgen bike tour to raise cancer research funds, help local economy
      The Amgen Tour of California bicycle race will finish in the Conejo Valley this year, bringing attention and an economic boost to the cities of Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village and Agoura Hills. The eight-day, 800-mile race will cover 16 cities in California, including the three local host cities in the Conejo Valley.

Community comes together for fundraiser
      More than 600 supporters of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Conejo & Las Virgenes attended the seventh annual Stand Up for Kids dinner and fundraising auction last month in Westlake Village. The clubs serve 1,300 boys and girls from Calabasas to Thousand Oaks. This year’s event was at the Four Seasons Hotel and more than $230,000 was raised.

Learn to curl at SoCal Curling open house
      The SoCal Curling Club will host a curling open house at 7 p.m. Sat., Nov. 7 at the Iceoplex, 131 W. Easy St., Simi Valley. The event is open to anyone age 12 and older who would like to learn how to curl. Cost is $20. Curling will be played at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, next February.

Middle schools help Manna food bank with charity softball game, raise $620
      Los Cerritos and Colina middle schools had a unique fundraising event last month. The PTSA groups from both schools played a charity softball game. Proceeds from ticket sales went to Manna, Conejo Valley’s food bank. Students played against students, and parents and teachers from each school played against each other. Colina won the game.

      Cadette Girl Scout Troop No. 60711 of Thousand Oaks is collecting Beanie Babies and knitting scarves for service men and women through Nov. 30. The Cadettes are holding workshops to teach younger Girl Scouts about community service and to host collections at their elementary schools.
