JUMP FOR JOY—Oaks Christian senior quarterback Nick Montana, No. 5, celebrates a touchdown toss with a teammate.
NPHS (5-2) at
Agoura (2-5)
Outlook: Agoura’s slim postseason hopes hinge on the outcome of this contest.
Despite a rocky season to date, the Chargers can jump right back into the playoff mix by upsetting Newbury Park.
The Panthers can’t allow last weekend’s tough loss against Westlake to linger.
NPHS had unbeaten Westlake on the ropes late in that game but was unable to stop the Warrior offense in the closing minutes.
Agoura doesn’t possess nearly as much offensive firepower as Westlake, but with senior bruiser Sam Bradley back toting the ball on occasion, the Charger offense is finally starting to click and score some much-needed points.
Oak Park (3-4) at OCHS (7-0)
Outlook: Credit the Oak Park Eagles for refusing to quit on their season despite a rash of injuries to key starters.
Oak Park has won back-toback Tri-Valley League games on the strength of a defense that bends but won’t break.
As always, the Eagles face their stiffest test of the season against rival Oaks Christian.
The Lions can play a little defense as well.
OCHS hasn’t allowed doubledigit points in a game since Oct. 2 against Venice.
It was only two seasons ago, on this very field, that Oak Park shocked the Lions, 25-20.
It’ll require a Herculean effort for the Eagles to repeat that feat.
Last week’s top performers
Nelson Spruce, WR/DB, Westlake: The standout junior pass-catcher was unstoppable against Newbury Park, totaling nine receptions for 196 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including the game-winning score late in the fourth quarter.Richard Mullaney, WR, Thou sand Oaks: The junior passcatcher’s stock continued its rise as Mullaney hauled in 14 receptions for 225 yards and scored four total TDs against Calabasas.
Sean Garry, S, Newbury Park: Garry’s interception of Westlake QB Nick Isham midway through the fourth quarter put the Panthers in a position to win the game, but WHS ended up with the victory.
