Our government should keep hands off the Internet
Well, I thought the World Wide Web was pretty phenomenal as a vehicle for communication, information, artistic expression, commerce and innovation, among its other useful functions.
But along comes none other than the U.S. government, this time via the Federal Communications Commission, to dabble in operations of the Internet in the name of “preserving the openness and freedom” that’s made it successful.
Sounds good, right?
Sure, if it were actually needed and something the private sector couldn’t or wouldn’t provide. But the Internet works well for its millions of users!
Do we need to invent reasons why it won’t in the future? Even FCC Chair Julius Genachowski says, “The key to the Internet’s success has been due to its openness. The Internet was designed to be future-proof.”
So why do we need the government to tamper with it, in the name of “net neutrality” and “transparency.”
If these values are such a concern, why not start with projects the American taxpayers have already funded and deserve to fully review, like healthcare bills, capand-trade legislation and the Federal Reserve.
Please, Obama administration and FCC: mind your own business and keep your hands off our Internet. Diane Hawkins Newbury Park
