Has never seen worse drivers than in Conejo Valley

Having just moved here two years ago, I can’t help but notice this community has some of the worst drivers in any city where I’ve ever lived.

The lack of respect for driving laws in this city is second to none. I live on and drive Janss Road every day. The speed limit is 35 mph, except in school zones.

Today I was driving my kids to school, and as I passed La Reina School I was going about 25 mph in the school zone when a sports car passed me in the center median at about 40 mph and continued into the hospital parking lot, most likely late for their 8:30 a.m. shift.

This was highly dangerous, but it’s just the tip of an the iceberg for Janss Road.

Because thoroughfares like Janss and Las Flores are so wide and also residential, they give drivers a false sense of safety, resulting in higher speeds— closer to 45 mph than the posted 35 mph. Most days when I pull into my driveway somebody is locking up their brakes to avoid rear-ending me, even though I give at least 100 yards of notice with my blinker.

I love people who tailgate me while I pull into my driveway and they’re on their cellphone.

One of these day there’s going to be a bad head-on accident, because they always pull around at the last second into oncoming traffic and then honk as if I did something wrong.

When exiting my home and entering a speeding stream of traffic, the honks and screeching brakes are constant.

The city needs to put motorcycle officers on these streets to nail all the speeders and tailgaters and cellphone users and especially motorists who pass via the median in school zones while children are arriving.

The city touts itself as the safest city in America, but it’s embarrassing as a resident that so many people in this community think that traffic laws don’t apply to them. Lyle Althoff Thousand Oaks
