Groups to discuss genes associated with cancer

2009-10-08 / Health & Wellness

The Hevra Hadassah Group, along with the Emek Ha Ilanot Hadassah Group and Temple Adat Elohim’s adult education committee, will present a meeting concerning the science and genetics related to genetic testing of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes associated with breast and ovarian cancer among Jewish women at 7 p.m. Thurs., Oct. 15 at Temple Adat Elohim, 2420 E. Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks.

Risk factors and family history features that warrant genetic testing will be covered along with the benefits and limitations of the testing.

One of the speakers will discuss how BRCA testing led to her choice to have an elective double mastectomy in 2007.

The speakers will be Erin O’Leary and Lauren Rothman.

O’Leary, a genetic counselor, received her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Duquesne University and recently joined the Familial Cancer Registry and Genetic Evaluation Program at UCLA, where she counsels patients and families at risk for inherited cancer syndromes.

Rothman was the director for the Hadassah Metro Area Resource Center. Rothman left Hadassah in 2008 to accept a position as director of president’s associates at Cal State Northridge.

The meeting is open to the community, free of charge.
