India Friends to host forum

India Friends Association will host the 11th annual Fall Forum at 2:30 p.m. Sat., Oct. 2 at the Borchard Community Center, 190 Reino Road, Newbury Park. The public is invited.

Award-winning author and activist Dr. Devinder Sharma will discuss “Saving India’s Farmers, Saving India—The Great Corporate Land Grab: Ground Reality and How to Stop It.” A discussion and Indian dinner will follow.

The event is free. Reservations are requested by e-mailing madhubajaj@gmail.com.

Sharma trained as an agricultural scientist and worked with the Indian Express, one of the largest selling English language dailies in India. He quit journalism to research sustainable agriculture, biodiversity and intellectual property rights. He has written extensively on environment and development, food security and poverty, biotechnology and hunger, and the implications of free trade for developing countries.

Sharma’s talk will cover the world’s food security situation. In India, the per capita availability of food has declined, and farmers are killing themselves. Urban migration remains unabated.
