STICK ’EM—Thousand Oaks High defender Steven Penfield, background, puts a hit on Valencia ball-carrier Jake Reed.
Rio Mesa (1-0) at
Newbury Park (1-0)
Outlook: Both squads feature some of the county’s premier playmaking threats.
Although their overall team performance was impressive during last week’s 30-17 win at home against Camarillo, the Panthers’ vaunted rushing attack never found much of a rhythm.
NPHS senior running back Cameron Roberson, a Notre Dame commit, was held to 92 yards on 24 carries, although he did score a pair of TDs.
Rio Mesa senior running back Jamaal Perkins had 110 yards and three TDs during the Spartans’ Week 1 victory over San Marcos.
The Spartans made four pass attempts and rushed the ball 40 times against San Marcos.
Westlake (1-0) vs. Saugus (1-0)
Outlook: Westlake was on fire during its 48-26 season-opening win against Paso Robles.
After a bye week, it’ll be interesting to see if the Warrior offense can maintain its momentum.
Saugus beat Pasadena 17-7 in its first game of the season.
In that game last weekend, Saugus senior wideout/defensive back/kicker Manny Padron had six receptions for 152 yards and a score, a pair of interceptions, a field goal, four touchbacks on kickoffs and he booted three punts.
Stopping Padron will be priority No. 1 for the Westlake defense.
On offense, expect Warrior record-setting wideout Nelson Spruce to receive plenty of attention from the Saugus defenders.
