Defends the animal shelter
I was sad to read the letter about the dog that was turned in to the Agoura Animal Shelter to be euthanized and the trouble your reader had in understanding the policy to hold the dog (“The animal shelter goes too far in saving a dog’s life,” Sept. 3 Thousand Oaks Acorn ).
Believe it or not, there are many owners who turn their dogs in to the shelter with less honorable intentions. It’s been my experience as a volunteer there that we give every animal the benefit of the doubt and work with owners to understand that there may be options.
By asking for the medical records, it’s an opportunity to get a second opinion and perhaps give the animal another chance at life.
While I empathize with the owner, I question why her veterinarian didn’t perform the procedure if they felt it was the best thing for the animal. Charlene Moersen Thousand Oaks
The original writer said in her letter, “My vet doesn’t do x rays or biopsies or euthanasia.”
