Rotary Club’s Oktoberfest to feature more than 25 local, German microbrews

The Newbury Park Rotary Club’s 23rd annual Oktoberfest will offer at least 16 types of authentic German brews from five historic Munich breweries at the beer tasting pavilion.
Oktoberfest is set for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sat. and Sun., Sept. 26 and 27 at Underwood Family Farms, 3370 Sunset Valley Road, Moorpark.
From the 23 Freeway take the Tierra Rejada exit.
The five Munich breweries are Spaaten, Paulaner, Hacker-Pfchorr, Hofbrau and Weihenstephan.
“Weihenstephan is the oldest brewery in the world, dating from A.D. 1040 when beer was first made in a monastery just outside Munich,” said Chuck Hiigel, Rotary’s beermeister and beer specialist with Wine Warehouse.
Hiigel is responsible for securing the beers for the Rotary’s Oktoberfest.
He credits Germany’s strict brewing guidelines of using only grains and water for the distinct German beer flavor.
JJ Brewsky’s is sponsoring a selection of California microbrews. The tasting pavilion will showcase Northern and Southern California beers.
Representing Southern California are Stone Brewing of San Diego, Alesmith of San Diego, The Bruery of Placentia and Port Brewing of San Marcos.
Representing Northern California are Marin Brewing of Larkspur, Bear Republic of Healdsburg, Speakeasy Brewery of San Francisco and Drakes Brewing of San Leandro. Oktoberfest will feature morthan 25 beers from Californimicrobreweries and from Municduring the two-day event.
