Ventura County food bank will host a variety of collection events

FOOD Share, a Ventura County regional food bank, serves more than 40,000 people in need each month, including many children.

According to feedingamerica .org, one in eight Americans will struggle with hunger today, and $1 donated to an agency like FOOD Share equals $7 worth of food.

Last year FOOD Share donated 6.3 millionĀ poundsĀ of canned goods and each month served after-school snacks to 2,100 children through its Snack Attack program.

•Christian radio station KDAR in Oxnard will ask for food donations during the fifth annual Faith for FOOD Share radio-thon on Wed., Sept. 23. Churches may register their congregations by calling Jeanne Benitez at FOOD Share at (805) 983-7100, ext. 122.

•The Day of Gleaning will be on Sat., Sept. 26. FOOD Share will provide volunteers to pick or pick up excess produce from local fields. The gleaned fruits and vegetables will be given to the needy.

Gardeners and growers who have a fruit tree or trees or garden they would like gleaned should call FOOD Share to arrange for gleaning.

Volunteers who want to help glean should register with FOOD Share by calling at (805) 983-7100, ext. 199. On the day of the event, volunteers will meet at 8:15 a.m. at FOOD Share’s warehouse, 4150 Southbank Road, Oxnard, for transport to the fields.

•Garden Share is a grassroots community growing concept that brings together people in the community who are growing their own food. Extra produce is shared with neighbors, church pantries and FOOD Share.
