The animal shelter goes too far in saving a dog’s life
On July 27, my husband relinquished our pet for euthanasia at the Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control in Agoura Hills. He was advised that she would be evaluated by the vet before she was put down. She’s 13 years old, has bilateral advanced cataracts, severe arthritis (on medication), multiple lymphomas, hypothyroidism (on medication) and a large unidentified abdominal mass. My vet doesn’t do X-rays or biopsies or euthanasia. I didn’t bring any of her records because she was going to be put to sleep and it was a very difficult decision for me to make.
Imagine to my surprise the next day when I went on the website to see all had been done correctly, I find she’d been put up for adoption. I was extremely upset and had my husband go back to get her.
We were then charged an impound fee and a kennel fee. I wasn’t going to have my wellloved pet spend her last days in a prison. We’ve had her for 13 years and have worked through many behavioral and medical issues with her, but when she has difficulty walking, difficulty eating, difficulty seeing and a large mass in her abdomen that will probably rupture soon, we realized it was time for her to go peacefully to doggie heaven.
Now I have to make this decision all over again, and it was very hard to do the first time. I hope others in such a situation will become aware of the policy of this shelter and that some change can come of this episode. Jeanne M. Armstrong Thousand Oaks
