Increase the fines for drivers who use cellphones with their hands
Thank you for printing BethJo Gewirtz’s letter regarding illegal cellphone and texting usage while driving.
I believe this a statewide dilemma and that the only way we can correct the law-breaking situation is to increase the fines and hit the pocketbook.
Currently, the fines are too minimal.
It’s been said that using your cellphone and or texting while operating a motor vehicle is compared to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The fines should reflect that.
For example, $500 for the first offense and $1,000 for the second and go up from there.
By raising the fines of this law-breaking problem we could add a little money to the California coffers and maybe get people thinking twice about using the cellphone or texting while operating a motor vehicle. Laura Martin Westlake Village
