Goodbye, Maple Elementary School
After working at Maple Elementary School as a campus supervisor, P.E. instructor, cafeteria worker and volunteer for almost 14 years, I was just notified by the principal that my services were no longer needed.
On Aug. 17, the principal notified me, “We are going to exercise the option of you as an exempt employee and thank you for your many years of service, which have been just fine. But we are going to make the separation. Time to make a change. Taking the campus supervision in a different direction. It is the principal’s prerogative. I can in the morning, in the middle or at the end of the day say, ‘We’re done.’”
I wasn’t aware that exempt employees could be let go on such short notice, with the only noted reason being her “prerogative.”
I would have appreciated notification in June to provide me with time to not only say goodbye but to also seek other employment.
To the teachers and staff: I will truly miss you all. You are hardworking, dedicated, underpaid and do not get the appreciation you all deserve. It’s so sad to watch the administration not back you for all you do. I hope the parents understand how much of your own time and own money goes into teaching and caring for their children. New leadership is needed in so many areas of Conejo Valley Unified School District. I’ll be praying for you all.
To the parents and great kids: I’m so very sorry I wasn’t given the opportunity to say goodbye to each and every one of you. I have watched you grow into beautiful young people, some of you now in college or married, and others just starting your education. It’s been my pleasure to spend time with you, watch and help you grow, to give you hugs when needed, a bandage when hurt or just an ear to listen when you needed to talk.
Keep up the good work and remember what my biggest rule was for all of you: the Golden Rule.
Treat people the way you want to be treated.
My love to you all; I miss you already. Debi Coleman Newbury Park
