Put the cellphones down, people, and obey the law

I’m writing a letter in the hopes someone will understand.

I was born and raised in Westlake Village. I moved to the San Fernando Valley for school a few years ago, but I still work in Westlake three days a week.

I spend about 80 percent of those days in the car driving around Conejo Valley.

Lately, it seems as though almost all of the drivers around here blatantly ignore the new “hands free” driving law.

I’ve had many near accidents because of this, and I’m beyond frustrated!

Why don’t people feel the need to obey the law?

In the San Fernando Valley, I rarely see anyone holding a cellphone while driving, but in Conejo Valley, I rarely see anyone not holding a phone.

How’s this teaching our teenagers and new drivers the need to obey the law?

Just because you don’t like the law doesn’t mean you should ignore it.

As a community, we’ve already had too many new drivers lose their lives over speeding and reckless driving.

Now there’s texting as well.

If we don’t follow the law and put down the cellphones, how can we expect our kids to? Beth-Jo Gewirtz Westlake Village
