Car crashes into restaurant, man injured by hot cooking oil

Luis Humberto Jolon, 22, is in serious but stable condition after being splashed with hot oil when a car crashed into a Newbury Park restaurant where he was working.

Georgia Jefford, 82, of Newbury Park slammed into the outside wall of the Burger Express, 2140 Newbury Road, at 10 a.m. Sat., Aug. 15, according to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Capt. Ross Bonfiglio.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but preliminary information suggests she accidentally acclerated rather than braking, Bonfiglio said.

Jolon was seriously burned on his arms, legs, groin and face when hot cooking oil splashed from three vats nearby him as he was working inside the restaurant, Bonfiglio said.

The Newbury Park resident was taken to the Grossman Burn Center in Sherman Oaks, where he’s being treated for serious burns that cover more than 21 percent of his body. He was expected to undergo surgery this week to removed unhealthy tissue so doctors can proceed with skin grafting, said Carolyn Greco, a burn center spokesperson.
