Relay for Life coming to Conejo Creek Park

2009-08-13 / Health & Wellness

The 12th annual Conejo Valley Relay for Life will take place from 10 a.m. Sat., Aug. 29 through 10 a.m. Sun., Aug. 30 at the Conejo Creek South Playfields, Janss Road at 23 Freeway, Thousand Oaks.

Participants take turns walking or running relay-style around the track for 24 hours. This year features a new, larger location, allowing teams to set up camp on the track. There will be fun events for all ages.

Teams can register up to 20 members for a flat fee of $150 for the entire team.

Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.

Following a cancer survivors breakfast, the relay begins at 10 a.m. with survivors taking a “victory” lap. After dark on Saturday will be the lighting of luminaria, decorated bags with candles, to honor cancer survivors and remember those who have died.

Conejo Valley cancer survivors may sign up to participate in the relay during an informational reception from 2 to 5 p.m. tomorrow, Aug. 14, on the patio of California Pizza Kitchen at The Lakes, 2200 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks, on the patio. Snacks and beverages will be available to survivors who sign up.

The goal is to recruit at least 200 survivors to participate in the opening victory lap.

Residents who are interested in starting or joining a relay team may also sign up at the Aug. 14 reception or at the Newbury Park Library, 2331 Borchard Road, from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Wed., Aug. 12 and 19.

In 2008, about 1,000 participants on 100 teams raised more than $300,000 at the local relay.

For more information or to sign up, go to www.cvrfl.org or call Jessica LaRoe of the American Cancer Society at (805) 448-5675.
