Beginning Sun., Sept. 20, Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village residents can shop at a new farmers’ market in the parking lot at the Village Glen shopping center at Agoura Road and Village Glen in the Thousand Oaks portion of Westlake Village.

The market will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday year-round. Fifty vendors will sell organic and locally grown fruits and vegetables along with cheese, bread, fish and nuts.

Most of the participating farmers are from Ventura and Los Angeles counties, said Melissa Farwell, market coordinator for Raw Inspiration, a Calabasas-based nonprofit operator of California Certified Farmers’ Markets.

Raw Inspiration operates several Southern California markets, including Old Town Calabasas and a new market opening in the Agoura Hills City Mall on Sun., Aug. 23.

Although the Village Glen shopping center is in Thousand Oaks, it’s geared toward Westlake Village residents.

“Until now they’ve had to travel up to Thousand Oaks or down to Calabasas,” Farwell said. “The city of Westlake Village is really wanting to make it their own, so we’re calling it the Westlake Village Farmers’ Market.”

Westlake hosted a farmers’ market about 10 years ago in The Landing shopping center on Lindero Canyon Road, but local residents protested the early Sunday morning activity, and it closed after a few months, said Scott Wolfe, city of Westlake Village senior planner.

“We’ve been working for a number of years to try to find an alternative location,” Wolfe said. “I suspect our residents will take the time to enjoy it.”

The farmers’ market is certified, which means that vendors are using organic or natural products or processes, Farwell said.

Raw Inspiration works with Jennifer McColm Certified, a certifying agency, to confirm that products sold don’t contain chemicals, synthetics or misleading labeling and do use recyclable or renewable materials.

“We think it’s important that somebody’s checked out the product, that somebody stands behind the product,” Farwell said.

Raw Inspirations provides organic gardens to schools.

Its mission is to teach children where food comes from, to encourage healthy eating and to combat childhood obesity.
