Westlake's Smith wins Simi Valley golf event
Aaron Smith of Westlake won the Simi Valley City Amateur Golf Championship by five strokes Sunday at Simi Hills Golf Course.
Smith posted a 12-under-par 130 during the two-day event. His rounds of 6-under-par 65 each day gave him the victory over Paul Misko of Thousand Oaks and Chris Russo of Westlake, both of whom finished at 7-under-par 135.
Taking fourth place at 6under-par 136 was Matt Siporin of Tarzana.
The Championship Flight was very strong, according to Simi Hills manager and head professional Brian Reed.
"There were (more than) 80 quality players contending for top honors in our Championship Flight, with players from throughout Southern California in the hunt," Reed said.
"The depth of the field was confirmed by the level of play, with 13 players completing two rounds at scores under par. This is a really remarkable accomplishment and far exceeds the results we've had in prior city championships."
In the 'A' net flight, Mason Atkins of Newbury Park finished with a two-round net total of 138, or 4-under par, to win by two strokes over Jeff Schoenherr of Simi Valley, who shot net 140.
Simi Valley resident Sam Loss and Thousand Oaks' Yuuki Kurisu tied for third place with net 141s.
In the 'B' net flight, the winning score of 10-under-par 132 was posted by Kurt Hocker of Los Angeles. Finishing second was Mauricio Perez of Simi Valley, with a net score of 9underpar 133.
Gonzo Paigen of Valencia posted a two-round net score of 5-under-par 137 to win the 'C' flight by one stroke over Carl Guillan of Thousand Oaks and Larry Noble of Oxnard, who posted 138s to tie for second.
