Spaghetti bridge testing its strength
A WEIGHTY PROBLEM—Newbury Park High School student Evie Epifano, 16, prepares to hang a basket, where water bottles will be placed, from a bridge she and partner Christian Castaneda, 17, of Hueneme High School (not pictured) made out of spaghetti and epoxy. The bottles would be used to test it for strength. The Bridge Breaking Event July 23 on the campus of California Lutheran University was part of the Johns Hopkins Engineering Innovation for High School Students program. High school students from around the area participated in the fiveweek structural engineering program that culminated with students testing the strength of their bridges by seeing how many bottles of water they could hold. Epifano and her partner received the Strongest Bridge Award when their bridge was able to support 16 bottles. |
