Brush clearing season has arrived in Southern California
Wildfire season is here and the Ventura County Fire Department is encouraging property owners to keep vegetation cleared from around their homes to create defensible space for the firefighters and to remove fuel from areas where embers could land and start a fire.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reports that more than 1,600 fires are started in California every year by the improper use of equipment. Lawnmowers, weed trimmers, chainsaws, welders, tractors and other equipment can start a wildfire if used improperly or under unfavorable conditions.
"We recommend that people clear weeds and brush in the morning," said Capt. Ron Oatman of the Ventura County Fire Department. "Any piece of equipment that uses a gas or electrical motor should be used before 10 a.m. if possible, not during the heat of the day or under windy conditions."
Residents should choose the right piece of equipment for the job, because the wrong choice could be tragic.
"Don't use a lawn mower in dry vegetation," said Oatman. "The hot motor could start a fire and a metal blade can spark a fire if it hits a rock. Use a weed trimmer instead."
People driving in wildland areas should also pay special attention to their vehicles. Motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles and portable gasolinepowered equipment are required to have spark arrestors in wildland areas. Hot exhaust pipes, mufflers and catalytic converters can all ignite dry grass, so extreme caution should be used when parking off-road.
Residents who accidentally start a fire are urged to call 911 immediately.
