Transient has second thoughts about robbing bank- - but he's still arrested
Brian Reeves A local transient allegedly tried to rob a Thousand Oaks Citibank branch at Moorpark Road 12:30 p.m. July 8, but police say he changed his mind and walked out before obtaining any cash.
Outside the bank the 6foot4-inch, 332-pound man was met by responding deputies, who arrived at the bank in the 100 block of North Moorpark Road within seconds of the activation of a silent alarm, Thousand Oaks Police Department Detective Eric Buschow said.
"Inside the bank the employees and the customers were scared," he said.
Witnesses said Brian Reeves, 29, entered the bank, stood in the middle of the lobby and shouted that he had a gun and intended to rob the bank. Shortly after making the declaration, Reeves walked outside.
Police said Reeves wasn't armed during the incident. He told deputies he wanted to rob the bank but changed his mind.
Deputies arrested Reeves for attempted robbery. He was booked at the East County Jail in Thousand Oaks and charged with two felonies, second degree robbery and second degree burglary. Bail was set at $70,000. His next court date is July 21 at the Ventura County Superior Courthouse in Ventura.
Reeves is familiar to those who provide services to the homeless in Thousand Oaks.
"I've known him for seven years," said Diana Ortuno, Lutheran Social Services winter shelter manager. "Brian has been at the night shelter for food, but I haven't seen him in a while."
Reeves was released from jail on May 27 after a conviction for possessing marijuana for sale, according to Ventura County Superior Court records. Records also indicate about a dozen convictions since 1999 that include speeding, petty theft, public intoxication, driving under the influence without a driver's license due to a previous DUI conviction, and battery.
