      Ventura County Assessor Dan Goodwin recently announced the assessment roll for 200910 decreased by 2.34 percent this year. The assessment roll provides the basis for computing most of county government's generalpurpose tax revenue.

Verizon customers learn what life would be like without phones
      Thousand Oaks Verizon customers found out last Monday what it was like in the olden days when there were no phone lines. There was no dialing 911. ATM systems were down. Some Internet connections weren't working. Homes and businesses were affected. Verizon's TV service was also down.

Truck route signs may be coming down
      Those old black-and-white truck route signs with pointing arrows directing the vehicles down main arteries in Thousand Oaks may soon be history. At a public hearing during the City Council meeting that begins at 6 p.m. Tues., July 14, council members could vote to remove the signs.

U.S. House of Representatives approves crime-fighting funding
      The House of Representatives Appropriations Committee recently approved $1 million in funding for three projects requested as part of an appropriations bill. The projects are as follows. •$570,000 to create a Ventura County district attorney's DNA cold case prosecution unit.

Appeal going to City Council
      A Thousand Oaks couple want to keep retaining walls and decks that were built without permits within a restricted use area of their property. The planning commission has twice said no. Now an appeal to the planning commission's last decision is set to be discussed at the 6 p.m. Tues., July 14 City Council meeting.

      Former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee spoke to a sold-out audience at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley on June 29. Former first lady Nancy Reagan was in attendance.

Hours at self-help centers in Ventura County to be reduced
      Scheduling changes have taken place for each of the Ventura County Superior Court's self-help centers, which provide free informational assistance for self-represented litigants. All self-help centers will close at 4 p.m. in response to the state budget crisis.

Seminar alerts seniors who are targets of financial scams
      Esperanza Boggs, 89, lost every thing after her son, David Boggs, 51, set fire to their Camarillo home and killed himself on June 11. Described by his mother as armed and dangerous, David Boggs had been under investigation for alleged elder abuse, accused of holding his mother a virtual hostage for years in their home and embezzling $211,000 from her.

New President's Awards go out to volunteers
      Ten volunteers who have donated their time and talents to bettering the lives of thousands in Ventura County have been honored with the new Ventura County Community Foundation's President's Award, which was presented at the foundation's biannual volunteer reception in June at the Commemorative Air Force WWII Aviation Museum in Camarillo.

      A DAY TO HONOR AMERICA- Thousand Oaks resident Hans Lingens shows his patriotic spirit at Conejo Community Park. He attended the July Fourth Conejo Recreation and Park District's Summer Concert in the Park. The Conejo Pops Orchestra performed with special guests the Sherwood Singers. A tribute band to Johnny Cash is scheduled to perform at 5 p.m. Sun., July 19.

Cities offer lawn mower recycling program
      The Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center and Ventura County Air Pollution Control District have teamed up to make it easier for residents of Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and Moorpark to recycle gas-powered lawn mowers to qualify for discounts on environmentally friendly electric mowers.

      State Sen. Fran Pavley (DSanta Monica) presented Sustainability awards in May and June to organizations that have given top priority to the environment. In May Pavley recognized Point Dume Marine Science School in Malibu; Earth Island, a solarpowered facility for vegetarian products; and the Calabasas Civic Center.
