Railroad to host range of events

The Fillmore & Western Railway offers the following train rides this month. All trips depart from and return to the Fillmore station.

•July 3: Shake, Rattle and Rail Family Dinner Train to Santa Paula. A zoot-suited DJ plays the tunes of the '50s and '60s in the on-board dance car. Diner food is served before passengers visit Santa Paula's classic car show.

The cost is $45 adults, $30 children ages 4 to 12, and $22 children ages 2 to 3. Children under 2 ride for free on lap. Dinner is not included.

•July 4: Sespe Creek Car Show & Festival. More than 250 classic cars pre-1974 will be on display throughout downtown Fillmore.

Cars pull into place at 8 a.m. The car show runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with awards given at 4 p.m.

The festival includes arts, crafts, commercial and food vendors in Central Park and the annual horseshoe tournament. Live band House Arrest will play on the steps of Fillmore City Hall.

The event is family friendly and alcohol-free.

Onehour train rides will depart at 1 and 3 p.m. Train fare is $12 adults, $7 youths age 4 to 12 and $5 children age 2 to 3.

•July 4: Firecracker Barbecue Train. On-board barbecue dinner includes tri-tip, chicken, potato salad, chili beans, garlic bread, dessert, and coffee or tea.

The train will travel through the orchards of the Heritage Valley before returning to Fillmore to view the city's fireworks show. P. Maxwell Production acting troupe will entertain passengers during the trip.

The cost is $72 adults, $41 youths age 4 to 12 and $22 children age 2 to 3. Infants under 2 years are free on the lap of a parent (no seat or meal).

•July 5, 12, 19, 26: Weekend Scenic Excursion-Wine and Honey Express. Ride through Heritage Valley fruit orchards. Stop at Loose Caboose Garden Center and Gift Emporium, and Bennett's Honey Farm.

Depart from Fillmore at noon and return approximately 4 p.m. With the purchase of a meal during trip, passengers will receive three complimentary wine tastings and a strawberry dessert.

The cost is $24 adults, $22 seniors, $14 youth age 4 to 12 and $10 children age 2 to 3. Meals are an additional charge.

•July 11: Night Train To Murder Mystery Dinner Train. Actors play out murder mystery for passengers to solve.

The cost is $89 per person for adults over 18 years old only. Reservations are required.

•July 11, 18, 25: Weekend Scenic Excursions Train Rides. Optional lunch on board train. Approximate four-hour round trip with stops in Santa Paula and Loose Caboose Garden Center and Gift Emporium.

Departs from Fillmore at noon and returns between 3:30 and 3:45 pm., rain or shine.

The cost is $24 adults, $22 seniors, $14 youths age 4 to 12, $10 children age 2 to 3. Cab rides are available for $50 per segment.

•July 18: Margarita Madness. Three-hour trip with Mexican dinner and margarita. Open-air dance car features live band.

Departs at 6:30 p.m. and returns at 9:30 p.m. The cost is $51, adults only.•

July 25: Viva Los Vegas Murder Mystery Dinner Train. A new murder mystery set in the Vegas days of the "Rat Pack."

Departs at 6:30 p.m. and returns at 9:30 p.m. The cost is $89 per person, adults 18 and older only. Reservations are required.
