Residents needed to serve on city committees
      The city of Thousand Oaks is recruiting for nine vacancies on the Social Services Ad Hoc Committee and two vacancies (one regular and one alternate) on the Ventura County Citizens Transportation Advisory Committee. Applicants must be residents of Thousand Oaks. Applications are due by Fri., July 10.

      Since the Fourth of July holiday falls on a Saturday this year, Newbury Disposal will maintain regular trash collection schedule for Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks customers during the week of June 29 through July 3.

Thousand Oaks budget approved in spite of uncertain costs and revenue
      The budget approved by the Thousand Oaks City Council on June 9 could change due to fluctuations in water rates, public safety costs, and sales and property tax revenue. Water rates are expected to increase; police costs charged to the city by the county are anticipated to rise by as much as 5 percent. Sales and property tax monies may continue to decline.

Ramp meters have been activated on the 101 Freeway
      Caltrans has activated onramp meters on the southbound 101/ Ventura Freeway between Rancho Road in T.O. and Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas. The meters are active weekdays from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

City's economy has been doing reasonably well
      Although a decline in sales tax revenue has been factored into the city's budget, numbers could be even worse than anticipated, said finance director John Adams after the June 9 City Council meeting. Sales tax revenue at this time is well below the 2007 level, said city economic development manager Gary Wartik.

      HARD ROCK— This is an easterly view of the Pacific Rock quarry, formerly known as the Mary Smith quarry, on a mountainside near the 101 Freeway, south of the Conejo Grade. The quarry has been operating for decades. It excavates boulders for private companies and government agencies to fortify coastal and creek embankments.

Roller hockey league will host poker tourney
      Thousand Oaks Bruins Hockey will host a poker tournament at 6 p.m. Fri., July 26 at the Paseo Marketplace, 3691 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Westlake Village. The event will include prizes and an auction. Cost is $65 in advance, $75 at the door and $20 for those who won't be playing poker.

      GOOD SAMARITAN— Leila Flanagan of Westlake Village will be a seventh-grader at La Reina. She heard that Manna food bank was having problems meeting the needs of Conejo Valley residents, so she decided to do something about it. She wrote letters asking for food donations, attached them to paper grocery bags and left them at doors of neighbors in her cul-de-sac.

      WILL BE GETTING MARRIED— Christine Ann Kingsley, daughter of Ted and Mitzie Kingsley, and Sean Bradley Peasley, son of Craig and Heather Peasley, will be married in about a year. They met while working together at Amgen Thousand Oaks. After a long friendship they fell in love.
