Thousand Oaks High School senior standouts
Alex Johnson Alex Johnson will graduate today from Thousand Oaks High School, where he was the highest allaround scorer on the Academic Decathlon team.
The 18-year-old was named the Most Valuable Player in the Marmonte League for boys' tennis in 2007-08. The co-captain of the tennis team helped the Lancers win their first CIF-Southern Section Division I team championship last week.
Alex, 18, won a Ventura County Star Journalism Award and is president of the Red Cross Club on campus. He's vice president of Project Concern, a staff writer for the school newspaper and a vice chair of the Thousand Oaks City Council's Youth Commission.
The son of Nels and Lucy Johnson, Alex plans to attend Claremont McKenna College and double major in economics and Spanish.
Stephen Marsh was a fouryear member of the school's Academic Decathlon team, and he also served as its president.
Stephen is an ACLU member, an American Red Cross volunteer, a National Merit finalist and a captain and four-year member of the Lancers' Mock Trial squad.
Stephen Marsh The 18-year-old participated in the Knowledge Bowl, Geopolitics Club, the 411 News Club, Teen Court and the drama department.
Stephen said he was influenced by many teachers at TOHS, including Tim Hoag, Brenda Burgar, Kelly Mills, Jerry Morris and Felix McGinnis.
The Lancer will attend Yale and study political science and international studies.
The son of Marilyn KatzMarsh, Stephen would like to work as a lawyer.
"I love trials," he said. "I love the theater of it."
Robert J. Lamm will graduate from Thousand Oaks High School today as a valedictorian and a National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete of the Year.
The 18-year-old, who played football for four years, was named the Lancers' Most Valuable Offensive Lineman.
Robert was a member of the California Scholarship Federation and the school's Math Team, and he also won the school's talent show.
His favorite class was AP physics.
Robert J. Lamm "It's challenging and applicable," he said. "It's a wonderful course."
Robert said his biggest fans— on and off the field—are his parents, Richard and Maggie Lamm.
"They've supported me all along," he said. "They've never missed a football game or a show my band has played."
Robert will study bioengineering at UCLA.
Denis Lin will graduate today as a valedictorian.
A cocaptain of the boys' tennis team, Denis helped the Lancers win the school's first team title in tennis at the CIFSouthern Section Division I finals last week. Lin also won back-to-back doubles team titles in the section.
He was a boys' tennis MVP in the Marmonte League and on his team.
The 17-year-old is a member of the Math Team and the Recycling Club. He is also a National Merit finalist and National AP Scholar.
Denis said his favorite subject is math "because it is very logical, and it's easy to understand for me. The problems can be solved eventually. Math is ordered, logical— and it makes sense."
Denis Lin The son of Yun Lin and Yajing Yang, Denis will attend Stanford.
Shirley Zhang attends Thousand Oaks High School, where she's a National Merit finalist and class valedictorian.
A Star Scholar, Shirley, 18, is a first ensemble section leader on the drumline for the Lancer band.
Her favorite class was history with Ellen Jackson, who "expected more from me even when I thought I was doing my best," and who she says has a sense of humor.
The daughter of Libo Zhang and Karyn Xiao, Shirley said her parents have had the biggest influence on her life because they raised her with values.
She plans on attending UC San Diego and would like to continue her education in graduate school. Shirley said she wants to be "happily employed doing something I love."
