Boy, 7, still in critical condition

There's been a change in the condition of a 7-year-old boy who was struck by a car while riding a bike without a helmet, said traffic Sgt. Robert Fleming on Tuesday. The child has a serious head injury and remains unconscious, but he's off the ventilator and is breathing on his own.

"Things are looking up," Fleming said.

The Newbury Park boy was riding near his home on a sidewalk on Sat., May 30 at about 2:20 p.m. when he suddenly left the sidewalk between two parked vehicles and rode into the path of a motorist. The driver had no time to react, Fleming said.

Reina Linares, 49, of Newbury Park was driving no faster than the 25 mph speed limit at Calle Turquesa and Paseo La Perla in Newbury Park when her car collided with the boy, Fleming said.

The boy was taken by ambulance to Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center. There he was stabilized and airlifted to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, where he remains in the pediatric intensive care unit.
