Not impressed by Obama's nominee for Supreme Court

Regarding President Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court, he made the politically correct choice, but not the correct one.

If any choice is based on ethnicity and/or gender, then I'm sure there are many more highly qualified candidates that could've been chosen.

I don't mind that a person from a minority is considered for nomination, but it should be a person who's exhibited through temperament and judicial decisions that they base their opinions on law and the Constitution.

The nomination for Ms. Sotomayor is troubling because she's already shown through several of her statements that she has an attitude of "us against them" and doesn't seem to have wholly assimilated into American culture.

She's holding onto a biased and separatist viewpoint, although she effectively conceals it.

I know Obama feels the need to appease the radical Hispanic lobby that supported him during the last election, but bowing to the pressure of lobbyists shouldn't be the reason for deciding on a lifelong position that will have far-reaching effects on this country for decades.

I thought that he declared during his campaign that he would take the lobbying that goes on in Washington to task and see to it that lobbyists wouldn't have the ability to tell the legislators and his administration what to do.

We don't need a justice on the highest court in the land making crucial decisions based on empathy and "feelings."

We need justices who are fair but at the same time understand their role as upholders of the law and the Constitution.

We don't need justices who feel their role is to make policy from the bench, thereby making the judicial branch a quasilegislative form of government. Anyone who thinks that way isn't qualified and shouldn't be considered for a high court position.

Obama's candidate has already admitted that she's okay with judges making policy decisions, thereby, by her own words, disqualifying herself.

I urge the president to make another choice as the current one is problematic to say the least. Elizabeth Buckner Thousand Oaks
