WHS golfers play Poppy Hills
For the first time in school history, Westlake High qualified for the CIF State Boys Golf Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
The state tournament was held Wednesday morning at the famous Pebble Beach links.
Three high school teams from both Southern California and Northern California competed in the one-day finale.
Westlake head coach Dave Costley drove seven Warrior players, including a pair of alternates, to Pebble Beach Tuesday morning. The team took part in a practice round later in the afternoon.
Junior Jake Katz, who, according to Costley, played Poppy Hills when he was 7 years old, drove to the event with his parents after finishing a class final on Tuesday.
"I told Jake that the course is going to seem a whole lot shorter now," Costley said.
Westlake earned a berth in the state match by finishing in second place during last week's Southern California Golf Association CIFSoCal Championship.
The Warriors' team score of 368 tied Great Oak of Temecula for second, but WHS ultimately held a tiebreaker advantage.
La Costa Canyon of San Diego won the event with a 365.
Justin Edwards fired a 2under-par 70 to lead the Warriors. Brandon Hagy chipped in with an even-par 72, while Cole Seeger posted a 73.
Kevin Santos shot a 75 while filling in for Marshall Colby, who had to sit out with a one-match coach-imposed suspension.
"We run about 10 deep," Costley said. "I was willing to go to my 10th kid to put someone in because we're that good."
The coach was pleased with Santos' fill-in effort.
"He played very, very well," said Costley, who led Westlake to a Southern California title in 1996, before the state tournament existed.
Costley reinstated Colby for Wednesday's state final.
The Thousand Oaks Acorn will recap the action from Poppy Hills in next week's issue.
