Westlake High School senior student standouts
Claudia Lopez In the fall Stanford University will get new student Claudia Lopez, an accomplished student from Westlake High School who is going to major in human biology as a premedical student.
The 17-year-old has been awarded a Gold Award and is a scholar athlete.
She was also the ASB president her senior year, ASB junior class vice president, ASB sophomore class vice president and freshman class ASB treasurer. She was also secretary for advanced anatomy.
Claudia played junior varsity volleyball her freshman and sophomore years.
She was commissioner of community service her junior year.
Her favorite class was AP calculus.
The biggest influence in her life was her mother, Elizabeth Nguyen.
"It's cliché, but it is true. She was a single parent bringing me up and made everything we have today," Claudia said.
In 10 years she hopes to be interning in a great hospital.
In 10 years Elizabeth Cornelison, daughter of Holly and Rich Cornelison, imagines herself in a private elementary school classroom teaching little kids.
Elizabeth Cornelison "I have a passion for teaching, and I love children," she said.
The 18-year-old said she looks forward to what God has in store for her as she ponders promises made to mankind written in the Bible.
Her mother, she said, has influenced her the most.
"She is my best friend, and we share a special bond," she said.
Elizabeth will attend the University of Arizona in Tucson, where she will major in elementary education.
In high school she won the Ventura City Golf Championship in 2008, CIF Academic Team 2007, 2008 MVP Varsity Golf, first team Marmonte 2007-08, first team All Area 2008, JV Soccer Coaches Award 2007, SCPGA Toyota Tour Exemption 2008-09, CSF Gold Seal Bearer and first team All League varsity basketball. She also participated in the National Charity League, 2002 through 2009.
Westlake High School is graduating a young man who hopes to someday be a medical doctor, have a family and continue to live in California.
Aamir Iqbal Aamir Iqbal, son of Bader and Aasia Iqbal, will attend the University of California, Irvine.
While at WHS his favorite class was advanced anatomy.
"This class has given me the experience of a first-year medical course while still in high school," he said.
He was the president of Indian Culture Club, a volunteer at Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center, on the boys' junior varsity volleyball team his freshman and sophomore years.
"My sister and parents have had the biggest influence on my life. My sister has always provided advice and knowledge whenever I have been lost," he said.
He credits his parents for making him the person he is and the reason for his success.
Aamir was co-president of the Muslim Student Association. He was treasurer of his sophomore class and president of his junior class.
Jake Kneller, son of Leslie and Jack Kneller, won the Student of the Year Award for Scholar Athlete at Westlake High School.
Jake Kneller He was also on the 2008 Youth National Volleyball team, the 2009 Volleyball magazine Fab selection and on the volleyball team that won national championships in 2006 and 2008. He was the captain of the volleyball team in 2009 and made it to the CIF semifinals.
In the fall he will be playing volleyball for Stanford University.
His favorite class was AP calculus.
"It really makes you think and challenges your mind," he said.
The 18-year-old's parents are the people who have most greatly influenced him, he said.
"They have taught me how to work hard while also enjoying life and having fun," Jake said.
In 10 years he hopes to have graduated business school and be involved in a new company or working for a professional sports team on the management side, he said.
Austin Walker, 18, is the daughter of Bob and Debbie Walker.
After she graduates from Westlake High School she'll attend San Diego State University, where she'll major in kinesiology: pre-physical therapy. After that she plans to get her doctorate in physical therapy with a minor in sports journalism.
Austin Walker Her favorite high school classes were English and physiology.
"Both of these classes are extremely interesting to me and are closely related to what I plan to do with my future," she said.
In 10 years she plans to be a physical therapist and/or an athletic trainer for an NBA or NFL team, while having her own physical therapy and rehabilitation office.
She's the senior class president and was team captain of the junior varsity basketball team her junior year and captain of the varsity basketball team as a senior.
Austin also volunteered at the Agoura Hills Animal Shelter. She was a member of Students Against Drunk Driving and Interact Club for all four years of high school.
