Summer reading program begins
The summer reading club for children and teens will start Mon., June 15 at the Grant Brimhall/ Thousand Oaks and the Newbury Park Branch libraries.
All children, including babies and preschoolers, may join the Be Creative@Your Library club. Registration continues every day through Sun., Aug. 2.
Teen volunteers will be at the reading club desks to help children sign up and receive a calendar of summer activities.
Express Yourself@Your Library is for youths in sixth grade and up. Sixth-graders may join "Be Creative" if they prefer.
The clubs have no reading requirements, no required numbers of books to read and no limitations on genres or reading levels.
Children are encouraged to explore the library collections and read whatever appeals to them.
Those in the children's club will receive a reading log and book bag when joining. The log can be used to track the time spent reading or for listing the titles read.
Listening to books counts as well as reading. Children who listen to recorded books (bookcassettes, audio-books or "Playaways"), or who have books read aloud to them can record those titles in their logs.
Children will receive small weekly prizes and are eligible to enter contests to win other prizes.
Teens can win prizes in weekly drawings and in other contests such as Bookmark Design, Library Bingo and Where in the World?
Teens can rate books they've read and come to special teensonly events such as game nights, mystery nights presented by teen volunteers, drawing and songwriting workshops.
Programs offered for children will include book discussion groups, story times, a performer of Aesop's fables, an orchestral instrument "petting zoo," and a storyteller.
The summer programs are supported by Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library.
