Westlake boys' squad claims program's first section volleyball title by outlasting Royal
      It was an electric atmosphere for a classic CIFSouthern Section boys' volleyball title match between a pair of Marmonte League co-champions. With the Thousand Oaks High gymnasium crammed to capacity last Saturday night, the decibel level rising with each passing point, Westlake and Royal staged an alltime battle for CIFSS Division II supremacy.

CVU girls win Memorial Day tourney
      GETTING DEFENSIVE— The Real SoCal White '98 girls' soccer squad won the CVU Memorial Day Tournament of Champions. Real SoCal outscored its opponents, 14-1.       The Oaks Christian football team was ranked No. 9 nationally in a recently released preseason poll by the website www.MaxPreps.com. OCHS is expected to be led by quarterback Nick Montana, running back Malcolm Jones and lineman Cassius Marsh.

      The Ventura County EastWest All-Star Football Game takes place Saturday at 6 p.m. at Moorpark High. Top seniors from around the county will compete in the event, sponsored by the Ventura Downtown Lions Club.

      The Newbury Park High club lacrosse team secured a state championship Sunday afternoon at NPHS. Newbury Park defeated Petaluma of Northern California, 8-7, to take the title.

      Newbury Park High senior Charles Benton was named MVP of the East-West Ventura County Basketball Coaches Association boys' All-Star game last weekend. Benton led the East squad to a 106-101 victory at Ventura High.

      The Lancers have won it all. Thousand Oaks High's boys' tennis team captured the CIF-Southern Section Division I title over University High of Irvine 10-8 on Wednesday at the Claremont Club.

Former baseball coach criticizes parents, administration
      Another varsity baseball coach has left Newbury Park High amid a cloud of controversy. Last week, Chuck Berrington resigned his post as head coach at NPHS after just one season at the helm, a year in which his squad posted a 20-10 overall record, finished third in the Marmonte League and qualified for the playoffs.
