Westlake, Oaks Christian swimmers strike gold at Long Beach
The Westlake High girls' swim team reached a familiar pinnacle last weekend.
With only seven swimmers, the Warriors won the CIFSouthern Section Division II swimming finals with 178.5 points at Belmont Plaza at Long Beach.
The championship was Westlake's second in three years.
"This was really exciting to watch," said eighthyear swimming coach Todd Irmas. "I just want the girls to know how very proud I am of what they did.
"They surpassed their own expectations. It was such a joy to coach them this year."
The Warriors weren't the only local team to enjoy a strong showing in the pool.
Oaks Christian's boys, in its first year competing in Division II, finished second overall with 205 points to champion La Canada, which had 234.5 points.
The Lions, who had won four consecutive section titles in other divisions, jumped from fourth to second by earning second place in the last event, the 4x400 freestyle relay.
The relay team featured Nick Steadman, Chase Bloch, Dylan Duimovich and Collin Baratte.
Steadman, Bloch, Kevin Fleming and Jet Reich won the 200 freestyle relay for Oaks Christian.
"We had a small squad, but very high-quality efforts," said OCHS head coach David Moore, who has led the program for all eight years of its existence.
"We had more bang for the buck."
Bloch set a meet record in the 100 butterfly in 48.03 seconds, which is the third-fastest time in state history, according to Moore. Olympian Milorad Cavic of Tustin previously held the 100 butterfly record, notching a 48.42 in 2000.
"Chase is a bigtime performer," Moore said. "He'll race anybody anywhere, and he'll look forward to it. . . .
"He swam that (100 butterfly) with the intent to set a record, not just to win."
Oaks Christian's girls' team placed sixth overall.
Other local girls' teams were Calabasas (21st overall), Agoura (25th) and Thousand Oaks (36th).
Thousand Oaks (ninth overall), Agoura (15th) and Newbury Park (28th) also competed for their respective boys' teams.
Last year, the Warrior girls notched second place behind Hart, which moved up to Division I this season.
"That opened the door up for us," Irmas said.
Senior Jackie Brousseau led the way for the Warriors, winning a CIF individual title in the 100yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 3.97 seconds.
She swam legs in the first-place 200-freestyle relay (1:38.51) with Iris Yan, Abigail Puczkowski and Marisa DeWames, and 400 freestyle (3:35.19) with Meagan Norling-Christensen, Nora Darago and DeWames.
Brousseau was also third in the 50 freestyle (23.97).
"Of all the races I have seen her swim that was by far the most impressive," Irmas said of Brousseau's victorious 100 breaststroke. "She had a great first 50 yards. She got out fast and never looked back."
Oaks Christian's Haley Shillington, Diana Safa, Kelsey Koon and Taylor Amstutz took fourth in the 200 medley relay.
Shillington was second in the 200 freestyle (1:51.6) and the 500 freestyle (4:57.38). OCHS girls Koon, Amstutz, Safa and Shillington were second in the 400 freestyle relay.
Westlake's Puczkowski, Darago, Norling-Christensen and Savannah Miller won the consolation 200 medley relay, a key to victory, Irmas said.
Darago was fifth in the 100 breaststroke.
The Lion boys' 200 medley relay of Baratte, Duimovich, Fleming and Reich finished fourth overall.
Thousand Oaks' Spencer Boone, Griffin Talan, David Armstrong and Spencer Posey placed sixth in the same event.
Armstrong was fifth in the 100 butterfly, while Agoura's Vatche Kazanjian was seventh in the same race. Armstrong, Tyler Henry, Posey and Henly Ko were seventh in the 400 freestyle relay for the Lancers. Henry was seventh in the 500 freestyle.
Agoura's Shannyn Hultin was fourth (2:07.93) and Calabasas' Sareen Hagopian was fifth (2:10.81) in the girls' 200 IM. Hultin was also fifth in the 500 freestyle.
Baratte and Duimovich were fourth and seventh, respectively, in the boys 200 IM. Baratte was second in the 100 backstroke.
La Reina's Ariana Peschke was third in the 100 backstroke and eighth in the 100 freestyle.
Newbury Park senior Cameron Hargitai was fourth in the 500 freestyle.
Viewpoint's boys' team surged to a second place team finish at the Division IV finals.
The VHS boys won the 400yard freestyle relay in 3 minutes, 21.60 seconds. The squad consists of Isaac Wender, Ethan Veitch, Patrick Caloz and Jared Stern.
The boys' team earned 162 points, falling just shy of firstplace Patriot (171.5).
Viewpoint's girls earned ninth place, notching 102 points.
In diving, Calabasas' Natalie Stahl placed fifth among Division II girls with a score of 391.20.
OCHS sophomores Tiffany Rudzitis (14th) and Brooke Baur (16th) fared well in diving. They were followed by teammates Kelsey Krause (28th), Samantha Stiegler (29th) and Meredith Reiten (39th).
Lion freshman Chris Todd was ninth in boys' diving finals.
