A Newbury Park woman will be held on six counts and a special allegation that says she embezzled more than $50,000 from a charity. Ventura County Superior Court Judge Ken Riley found there was enough evidence for a trial.

Arraignment was set for June 10 for Cheri Lou Duval, 42, former president and CEO of the Coalition to End Family Violence, the nonprofit charity from which she allegedly stole money from July 2003 through January 2008.

"I am confident of the inaccuracy of the allegations. Monies spent were fully authorized by the hierarchy of the coalition," said Duval's defense attorney Richard Hanawalt.

Duval is alleged to have committed theft by using a coalition credit card for personal expenses, spending coalition money for personal expenses and paying herself excess money. She's also accused of committing grand theft auto and unlawfully using signature stamps with signatures of two of the nonprofit's board members.

If she's found guilty at trial, the special allegation adds one year to the sentence. The special allegation was included because she allegedly stole more than $50,000. The prosecution alleged during the preliminary hearing that she had taken more than $100,000, said Senior Dep. District Attorney Wendy Macfarlane.

If the charges go to trial and Duval is found guilty of all of them, she could go to prison for more than five years, Macfarlane said.

According to the prosecutor, Duval raised her $90,000 a year salary to $110,000 a year without permission, spent $1,600 at a shopping trip to Costco for purchases that were never given to the battered women's shelter and traded in a 2002 Ford van belonging to the shelter for a vehicle she gave to a family member.

Hanawalt said he's looking forward to defending his client and correcting the allegations.

"The sooner we get to trial, the sooner we get this straightened out," he said.
