WHS golfers claim another division crown
JANN HENDRY/Acorn Newspapers CHAMPS—Members of the Westlake High boys' golf squad are, top row, from left, Brandon Hagy, Justin Edwards and Jake Katz. Bottom row: Cole Seeger, Marshall Colby and Chris Doyle. The Westlake High boys' golf team has lived in the red all season, and Tuesday morning at Soule Park Golf Course at Ojai was no different.
Westlake posted a team-total 2underpar 358 to claim its second consecutive CIF-Southern Section Northern Team Divisional title.
A year ago, WHS won at the same course with the same score.
"This was very gratifying today," Warrior head coach Dave Costley said. "They did what they should have done and played well.
"Everyone's patting me on the back, but I didn't go out and do one stroke. I just drove them here."
The Marmonte League champions navigated past second-place Valencia (376) by 18 strokes. Arcadia (378) was third, followed by fourth-place West Ranch (384) and Calabasas (389) in fifth.
Thousand Oaks (394) finished seventh, and Royal (395) was eighth. Grace Brethren shot a 454 in the program's inaugural appearance in a CIF team divisional.
Seventeen schools representing eight leagues competed in the event.
Westlake, Valencia and Arcadia all advanced to today's CIF-SS Team Finals at Rancho San Marcos Golf Club at Santa Barbara, where 21 teams will compete for three spots in the state finals.
At Ojai, senior Cole Seeger fired a 69 to lead the Warriors on an overcast morning. He was backed by seniors Justin Edwards (70), Marshall Colby (71) and Brandon Hagy (72). Junior Chris Doyle posted a 76 to cap off the Warriors' total.
"We're just a really talented group," Edwards said. "As our coach has said, this is the best group he's had in all his years.
"We practice a lot. We play together. We like to stay competitive and make each other get better, and it's showing."
Hagy just missed a holeinone on the par-3 15th hole when he sent a 3-iron blast to within six feet of the cup. Colby said he relied on his putting to get him through a rocky start.
Calabasas had four players shoot in the midtoupper 70s, including Brandon Molnar (75), Kyle Demshki (78), Jordan Malinoff (78) and Paul Lee (78). Kevin Lee's 80 finished off the Coyotes' scorecard.
Paul Lee, a sophomore, said he was reaching the greens with ease but struggled with the slower putting surface. That was, of course, until he rolled in a 30-foot putt on the back-9.
"Every tournament makes you a better golfer," he said. "After this, we'll be even better next year."
Kyler Sauer's 73 paced Thousand Oaks. After his round, the senior said it was an up and down day from start to finish.
"I would've liked to have gone under par in my last high school match, but it was still a good day," Sauer said. "I'm happy with how I played."
Other Lancers on the scorecard were Derek Larson (76), Nolan Kovach (79), Nate Fisher (80) and Yuuki Kurisu (86).

Tyler Schwanz posted a teambest 76 for Oak Park. He was followed by Chris Riggs (77), Nic Yapp (81), Connor Paden (84) and Preston Walker (86).
Oaks Christian's top golfer on the afternoon was Ty Gretzky, who shot a 78. Ryan Prosser (80), Chad Baur (81), Andrew Hughes (84) and Nick Lyskin (84) also made the Lions' scorecard.
