America is either a nation of laws or it's something else
Ms. Buckner's letter in the Acorn suggesting that the Democrats' purpose in those responsible for the torture is for political revenge, is a rather narrow view, as I see it.
As an independent voter myself who leans towards a Libertarian way of thought, it would seem to me that you lost sight of the fact that we are a county of laws. If laws are broken, by anyone, do we look the other way if the lawbreakers are in powerful positions? If we support a government that prosecutes lawbreakers by discriminating between the people with power and money, where does that leave you and me?
Have you forgotten that military personnel, those ordered to carry out these horrific acts, were sent to prison and given dishonorable discharges? These military people were the ones blamed for this crime, and they are also the ones without a position of money and power to shield them from prosecution.
Now we hear that these soldiers, who gave their lives to defend us, were ordered to carry out these crimes, and yet those giving the orders should be exempt from any further action? This doesn't strike me as the way our nation should deal with lawbreakers of any kind.
It makes no difference what person or what particular political party breaks a law, they should find justice the blind mistress she's always been. Your thinking that any action taken by one party against another is only for a purely political purpose falls short.
I'm not a supporter of Sen. Feinstein. I'm a supporter of fairness under the law. If there were those in the government who broke our laws and gave orders to have prisoners tortured, they need to be prosecuted. If we don't do that we need to revisit our reason for only prosecuting and imprisoning those at the end of this issue. We need to prosecute all the lawbreakers or let those already locked up out. This has nothing to do with politics; it has to do with the meaning of justice and fairness for all.
This isn't a matter of defending or attacking one side or the other. It's only a matter of applying the laws we are governed by to all, regardless of who they are or how much money and power they wield. Lee Mannheimer Westlake Village
