Blowing tax money is unforgivable in today's economy
My blood boiled when I read that our City Council voted to spend $96,500 of taxpayer dollars to hire a consulting firm to make "a successful shopping center more successful." Thousand Oaks is an almost a perfect place to live, but we're missing two things: familyoriented recreational venues and a "downtown.

The Lakes needs cheaper retailers
I hear the City Council voted to spend $96,500 for a consultant to tell them how to improve business at The Lakes. Mind boggling. I could have told them what the problem is for far less money. The stores at The Lakes are too expensive- it's that simple.

The city of T.O. is squandering tax dollars on a mall
The lead article in the April 30 T.O. Acorn was about the city spending $96,500 for a consultant to help The Lakes. In the inside pages were articles and letters discussing the Do-it Center, the need for a roller and ice skating rink and other important issues.

The city is wasting $96,500 for what?
The Thousand Oaks City Council is insane. Ninety-six thousand dollars plus for a study about why more people aren't spending more at The Lakes? We have nothing better to do with that money? Why not have a couple of city employees ask people at The Lakes why they shop there and how often and how much they spend in an average month while there?

The Lakes should accept parking for Civic Arts Plaza
Since the city of Thousand Oaks invested $12 million into The Lakes development, according to Councilmember Claudia Bill-de la Peña and the April 30 T.O. Acorn , concertgoers should have a perfect right to park in The Lakes parking lot.

Voters deserve the City Council they have elected
I'm a 30-year resident of Conejo Valley. After reading the many letters about Home Depot, I found I, too, need to speak. To all the people who showed their concern for the seniors and children in the area, where have your complaints been for the past 40 years? Do you think that having a major retailer in this location didn't cause pollution?

Conejo Valley Days won't be saved without hard work
Having been a resident of Thousand Oaks for 36 years, small things have been milestones where our families live. These milestones include the Conejo Valley Days Parade and CVD. The parade was an opportunity for youth groups, equestrians, bands, car clubs, square dancers and many other exhibitors to strut their stuff.

Service comes first in smaller stores
After reading Bruce Rudman's ("Do-it Center wins again, but why?") letter in the April 30 T.O. Acorn and following the ongoing debate over the Home Depot request, I can only come to the conclusion that Mr. Rudman and others who are in favor of yet another big box store have never been in a "real" hardware store.

Some hearing aid companies don't play by the rules
I'd like to express my appreciation to your paper for publishing the letter of April 23 from Sandee Saurman. She described the California law for returning hearing aids and who to contact to report abusers.

America is either a nation of laws or it's something else
Ms. Buckner's letter in the Acorn suggesting that the Democrats' purpose in those responsible for the torture is for political revenge, is a rather narrow view, as I see it. As an independent voter myself who leans towards a Libertarian way of thought, it would seem to me that you lost sight of the fact that we are a county of laws.

Don't talk to him about how great Bill Clinton was
Alexander Dupre ("Hopes to see fewer Bush/Cheney bumper stickers") forgot to mention all of the Democrats authorized Bush to use force and hence regime change in Iraq. And let me remind everyone that that brilliant administration you were referring to, leaving a surplus and all, was also playing tricks on his wife and daughter while U.S.

A Republican and proud of it
In response to Alexander Dupre's letter in the April 30 T.O. Acorn ("Hopes to see fewer Bush/Cheney bumper stickers"), may I remind him that in America we the have right and liberty to own and drive whatever legally allowed vehicle that we so choose and display on that vehicle bumper stickers supporting the political candidate and party of our choice.

With Obama in charge, hold onto your billfold
In Obama's final campaign speech of 2008, he said, "I will give a tax break to 95 percent of Americans who work every day and get taxes taken out of their paychecks every week, and here are the facts: If you make under $250,

Wasted time for jury pools could be useful in education
I just spent the day serving on jury duty at the Ventura County Courthouse as I do every year. During that time, I had the opportunity to do a little thinking. Allow me to demonstrate using some basic math. There were at least 100 people there. They only started one trial that day, which required 12 people.

In the dark about Muvico's schedule
I'm very disappointed that the Muvico Theatres haven't been placing their movie schedule in the Thousand Oaks Acorn . In this economy, there are many people who cannot afford a daily newspaper. There are also many people who don't have access to a computer.

Learn Spanish now
Your May 7 headline about La Reina High School swimmer Ariana Peschke, "Peschke the pescado," is at the same time silly, ignorant and inappropriate. Pescado is indeed the Spanish word for fish, but only as a food commodity, i.e., caught, sold, cooked, served and/or eaten, similar to the English words beef and pork.

The T.O. Acorn is appreciated
As a Thousand Oaks resident of 13 years, I thank you for producing an informative and relevant weekly local newspaper. I find it very helpful in keeping me informed on local T.O. City Council issues and rulings, e.g., the proposed Home Depot site on Hampshire Road in T.O.
