Local nonprofit will close its doors

2009-04-30 / Letters

On Sat., May 30, the last used books will be sold at the Book Bag. Because of big-hearted and seriously committed staff and volunteers, we lived our vision: to make book ownership affordable and accessible, to encourage people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds to read and to connect people who love books and reading.

Two years ago, we thought we would have to close the store because of financial difficulties. We were able to delay that decision because of a strong economy, minimum competition and extraordinary efforts of current staff and volunteers, as well as the addition of newly dedicated and energetic volunteers.

Today people are buying fewer books because of the economic downturn. Books are sold on the Web for 99 cents, at garage sales and thrift stores for 25 and 50 cents and cost nothing if you borrow from the library. Currently our expenses significantly outpace our revenue, and we don't have a viable way to regain our previous break-even position.

No amount of heart and hard work can bridge this gap.

The Book Bag's retail store was a dream come true for two women who wanted to run a clean, friendly and organized used bookstore. It was an exquisite experience to have been surrounded by books and book lovers. The dream has run its course, and as we close the door to our little yellow store, we know somewhere another one is opening to fulfill yet another dream.

We' like to extend our sincere thank-you for the loyalty our community has shown over the past five years. We know all of our customers supported our mission to fund literacy efforts in the Conejo Valley.

Our book prices will remain the same throughout our final days of business. We won't be having a closing sale, or a final "fire sale." Books that aren't sold will be donated to other nonprofit literacy concerns.

Our bookcases and store fixtures will be available for purchase, in advance, for cash.

Thank you to all who supported the Book Bag.

We'll miss you. The Book Bag staff, directors and volunteers

The Book Bag is a nonprofit, not a commercial operation. It's at 202 N. Skyline Drive in Thousand Oaks.
