You can always vote by mail
      Residents who will not be home for the May 19 special election or who prefer not to go to the polls may vote by mail. The last day to request a Vote by Mail ballot is Tues., May 12. All ballots must be returned by 8 p.m. Election Day, Tues., May 19 for counting. Postmarks do not count.

Naval officer from T.O. who was killed in Afghanistan will be remembered in a memorial service set for 11 a.m. Sat., May 2
      Family and friends of Lt. Francis L. Toner IV are inviting the community to join them at a memorial service to remember "Frankie," who died a hero while serving the U.S. Navy in Afghanistan. The service, a tribute to Toner's life, will begin at 11 a.m. this Sat.

      The City Council has voted 5-0 to approve an estimated $673,288 community development block grant action plan for funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

For the record
      It appears that many of the food/beverage vendor booths will be back at the May 6 through 10 Conejo Valley Days carnival, according to a group that's been selling food at CVD for many years. The editorial on page 4 was incorrect last week in stating that fundraising organizations weren't expected to participate this year.

Deadline for cutting weeds is June 1
      The Ventura County Fire Department will mail nearly 14,000 weed abatement notices in April to property owners with land covered under the Fire Hazard Reduction Program. The notices inform property owners that they must establish a 100-foot clearance on their land to protect against wildfires.

Banquet will honor local American Hero
      Irish John Gore will receive the American Hero award as part of Hospice of the Conejo's 22nd annual golf tournament and banquet starting at 11 a.m. Mon., May 18 at Sunset Hills Country Club. Gore was born in Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1963. He became an American citizen in 1977.

      Stagecoach Inn Museum will present the seventh annual Antiques Faire from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sat., May 9 on the museum's grounds at 51 S. Ventu Park Road in Newbury Park. Hike in city fees causes disagreement in city hall
      After debating on whether to raise user fees in the current economy, the City Council voted 4-1 to increase the charges for a variety of services. Kavli Theatre school educational rental rates went up from $1,250 per day to $1,375 per day.

Many Mansions to get $2 million from AHA
      The Area Housing Authority, a nonprofit housing provider and a major supporter of Many Mansions, estimates that it will provide about $2 million in support of Many Mansions' projects this fiscal year. The funds originate at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and are provided to the AHA for housing assistance payments.
