Ventura County is making a mistake on library fees

2009-04-16 / Letters

I read with interest "County wants to stop paying nonresident library fees" in the April 9 Thousand Oaks Acorn.

As a frequent user of the Thousand Oaks Library and a resident in an unincorporated area, I can't help but wonder what kind of factual information our esteemed library services commissioners had when they voted to recommend that the county stop paying nonresident library fees.

Did they develop any factual data? Did they survey nonresident users of the library? Do they even know how many nonresident users of the library will be impacted by their decision?

If nonresident users must begin commuting to the county library in Camarillo, will the cost to the county and the nonresidents exceed what's currently being paid for use of the Thousand Oaks Library? Or did they simply figure that no one would care? I also noted that none of the commissioners who voted "yes" are from the Thousand Oaks area.

Perhaps that made their vote that much easier.

As for me, I hereby direct the county supervisors to fork over $70 of the county taxes I pay to the Thousand Oaks Library so that I can continue to enjoy their services. Jim Allyn Thousand Oaks
