Lutherans to discuss sexuality

Adina Nack, a California Lutheran University sociology professor, will give a free talk on "Lutherans and Human Sexuality: Social Trends Pose Moral Dilemmas for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America" at 4 p.m. Tues., April 14 in the Roth Nelson Room on Mountclef Boulevard on the campus in Thousand Oaks.

The lecture will discuss sexual norms and values and the challenges they pose for the Lutheran church.

Nack, a sexuality studies expert with a doctorate in sociology, will describe her work with the ELCA Task Force for Studies on Sexuality, with emphasis on the presentations she gave to the group as it produced a study guide called "Journey Together Faithfully, Part III."

The professor will discuss aspects of sexuality that the task force found to be particularly relevant and controversial for parishioners, including premarital sexuality, sexuality after divorce and sexuality outside marriage in late adulthood.

She'll also include information she presented on the impact of pop culture on youth sexuality at the national ELCA youth pastor conference in January.

Following Nack's talk, a CLU panel will respond and discuss resolutions on same-sex relationships that the ELCA Churchwide Assembly will consider in August.

The panelists will be English professor Allison Wee; Julius Bianchi, associate provost for information services; and Paul Egertson, a former ELCA bishop and senior religion lecturer.

The spring Reformation Heritage Seminar is sponsoring the presentation.
