Singers show they can dance
      'HOP ON DOWN'- - Amy Counts, 15, left, grooves with fellow Westlake High School choir member Carolyn Canzano, 16, at the school's recent annual Choir Banquet Dinner and Silent Auction at the Los Robles Greens Banquet Center. This year's theme was "At the Hop," and choir members and their families dressed like they were going to a 1950s sock hop.

      Park Oaks Elementary School is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an open house and alumni reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Fri., May 29 at the school, 1335 Calle Bouganvilla, Thousand Oaks. The event is for all past students, staff and friends of Park Oaks. Food and music will be provided.

      I always advise families to visit colleges over their spring break, since the colleges are in session and prospective students can get a real feeling for campus life. But given the current state of the economy, many families can no longer spend thousands of dollars traveling around the country.

Aspen recycles
      Aspen Elementary School will be recycling items such as juice packets, potato chip bags, cookie wrappers, plastic bags, cans and plastic bottles. All the school's students are encouraged to participate and recycle. The school has found sponsors to raise ongoing funding for the school for the recycled materials.
