Day laborer site in T.O. gets attention again in debate over Home Depot
      The city's day laborer site on Royal Oaks Drive received a lot of attention recently when City Council members repeatedly referred to it as a reason not to allow a Home Depot to be built on Hampshire Road.

'Charming couple' leaves a path of financial destruction
      After doing business with a Thousand Oaks couple who will likely be sentenced to decades in prison, a once financially comfortable local widow now depends on her Social Security check to survive. The Thousand Oaks widow, in her 70s, who doesn't want to be identified, met Terrance George Tucker, 64, and Sonya Tucker, 64, at church.

Fort Wildwood has 'cease fire'
      Conejo Recreation and Park District's plan for a concrete slab with picnic tables was nixed by residents who demanded more creativity in the replacement of Fort Wildwood. The site of the log fort that was destroyed in January after years of neglect will revert to a natural look while CRPD gathers additional public comments at community meetings.

11-digit dialing mandatory soon for 818
      Residents of the Conejo and San Fernando valleys will soon need to change the way they make their phone calls. Beginning April 18, all calls within the current 818 area will require 11-digit dialing. Callers will need to dial 1 plus the area code plus the phone number.

      A "TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party On Tax Day" rally will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Wed, April 15 at the Thousand Oaks main post office, 3435 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd.

      As state and federal governments struggle with a sagging economy and declining revenues, the move to legalilze and tax marijuana is growing. An online poll at www.toacorn.com asks readers if they favor the legalization of pot for its possible tax benefits. The poll is running 12-1 in favor.

Memorial set for veteran killed in Afghanistan
      Local memorial services for Lt. Frances L. Toner IV will begin at 11 a.m. Sat., May 2 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, 1600 Erbes Road, Thousand Oaks. The gathering will be a tribute to Toner's life. Known as Frankie to his friends and family, Toner grew up in Thousand Oaks and died a hero in Afghanistan on March 27.

Electronic recycling event planned
      Los Cerritos Middle School will host an electronics recycle and rummage sale event from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sat., April 25 at the school on the corner of Erbes Road and Avenida de Las Flores in Thousand Oaks. Donations will be accepted from April 20 to 24.

Impaired motorist to serve six years for killing T.O. jogger
      A Ventura County Superior Court judge sentenced Nicholas LaGrotta, 23, to six years in prison last Friday for killing a pedestrian while driving intoxicated. The Santa Rosa resident pleaded guilty in November 2008 to gross vehicular manslaughter after the Subaru Forester he was driving struck and killed T.O.

Library seeks board volunteers
      The Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library is seeking volunteers for board positions. The board meets once a month, and the new board will be elected in June for the July 2009 to June 2010 term of office.
