Walk to Work Day is April 3

The fifth annual National Walk to Work Day is Fri., April 3. The event encourages Americans to turn their commute into an exercise and healthy living opportunity by walking all or part way to work.

The event is endorsed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Prevention magazine and the California Podiatric Medical Association.

The prevalence of obesity among adults ages 20 to 74 more than doubled between 1980 and 2004, rising from 15 percent to nearly 33 percent, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Studies indicate that moderate exercise for 30 minutes per day reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, stress and depression.

A walk can also clear a person's head, help ready an employee for the workday, and increase productivity on the job.

Walking is free, easy to do, and environmentally friendly. For more information, go to www.calpma.org.
