UP ON THE ROOF—Workers put the finishing touches on solar panel installation at the home of Mark Brutzkus, a Westlake Village resident. Because the work can be costly, Brutzkus decided to save money by leasing his panels from a Culver City company called SolarCity. The same style of thin-film panels were used for a recent home renovation on ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." Brutzkus estimates the reflective, black glass solar panels will give him $25 to $50 in monthly savings. In general, solar leasing packages will vary depending on up-front fees, government rebates, local utility rates and length of contract.
