Panther coach Johnson resigns after 15 years

Following 15 seasons, Steve Johnson has resigned as head coach of the Newbury Park High boys' varsity basketball team.

Johnson, an NPHS graduate, will continue to teach at the school.

"As a high school player for four years, a college player for four more and 27 years as a high school coach, I've been on the hoops carousel for 35 years, and it's time to get off," said Johnson in a statement provided by Newbury Park.

"I will continue to do everything I can to help current and former players reach their academic and athletic goals."

During his tenure, Johnson led the Panthers to eight playoff appearances and won a pair of Marmonte League championships. He was twice voted league and county coach of the year.

The deadline for applying is Thurs., April 9. The position is open to all teacher and nonteacher candidates.
