Projects from Council on Aging will benefit seniors
The Thousand Oaks Council on Aging is engaged in three projects that will benefit senior adults in the area.
The council is a commission of nine seniors chosen by members of the City Council who provide seniors with a voice at city hall and distribute information on resources and their availability to help seniors in their daily living needs.
•The council annually searches for a senior volunteer to honor as Senior of the Year.
Applications for nominations are distributed to all service providers and organizations that rely on volunteers. Each organization nominates a volunteer they feel meets the spirit of volunteerism through their actions and concerns for their fellow seniors.
The applications must be submitted to the council by April 17. Seniors who have received a nomination will be invited to attend the Senior of the Year awards dinner at the Goebel Senior Adult Center on Thurs., June 4. At this time the award recipient will be named and honored. The public is invited to attend the celebration, which includes dinner and entertainment.
•For more than a year, the commission has been working on a Senior Adult Master Plan for completion by June for presentation to the city of Thousand Oaks as guidance in meeting the needs of seniors and baby boomers as the senior population ages and boomers move into the senior ranks.
The conclusions and concerns expressed in the plan will be generated from the results of a survey conducted in 2008 and from meetings with seniors and baby boomers during which the participants provided input regarding retirement issues.
Various aspects of retirement were addressed, including finances, housing, health, recreation and transportation.
The expectations are that the plan will provide information which will allow the city to start planning for the needs of seniors before the need becomes overwhelming.
•A second effort scheduled for completion in June is a revision of the Senior Services Directory.
The directory is an in-depth listing of all government agencies, social service organizations, and other nonprofit senior service providers offering services to seniors residing in Thousand Oaks.
This year, the council is soliciting help in publication of this directory. The council will be accepting advertising to defray the costs of printing and distribution.
To advertise in or assist with the publication of the directory, visit www.toaks.org and type "Senior Services Directory" in the search bar.
Providers not previously included in the directory but who wish to be may call Francine Sprigel at City Hall, (805) 4492743, or visit the website listed above.
