It's reality, not dreams, for the former Kmart site

2009-03-19 / Letters

I'm writing in response to letters published March 5 indicating a desire for a skating rink or a mixed-use development on the former Kmart site instead of a Home Depot.

It's just not feasible. For one, we already have a skating rink in the community that's not particularly booming with business. A mixeduse development that includes a residential element would definitely generate traffic, and I'm pretty sure the zoning wouldn't allow it.

Many of us longtime residents remember there were skating rinks and small shopping centers on or near that site that didn't last, and there were reasons. But finally we have a company, Home Depot, that's followed all the rules, invested time and resources to build on this site and is ready to go. In this economy, can we really afford to scrap these plans, wait another several years in hopes that another company might invest in this property?

We need the tax revenue and jobs now. Home Depot is the right choice and ready to open for business.

Let's take advantage of this opportunity. Phyllis Jackson Westlake Village
