New sculptures to be unveiled in T.O.
NEW SCULPTURE- "Uranus" will be displayed outside of the children's entrance of the Grant Brimhall/Thousand Oaks Library. Unusual shapes called "Curved Air," "Uranus" and "Oracle in Stone" will be on display in Thousand Oaks.
At 3 p.m. Sat., March 22, two monumental sculptures by artist Alexander will be unveiled on the front grounds of the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.
The hour will also mark the formal opening of an interior show at the Fred Kavli Theatre Gallery, which will feature two other artists, along with Alexander. Edward Carlo Pacio from Calabasas and Ann Krasner from Malibu will also have works on display.
Alexander has donated a fivesculpture exhibition that includes three of his post-contemporary monumental works that will be exhibited for the first time.
Two of the larger sculptures will be outside the plaza, and the third will be outside the children's library entrance. Two smaller works will rotate around the city at various public buildings, said Stacy Park of the community and cultural services staff.
"The artist is internationally recognized. This is a beautiful donation made from natural materials with the color and shape that is perfect for the park," said Stephanie Angelini, chair of the Thousand Oaks Arts Commission. Alexander, 90, lives in Santa Monica, where he inline skates and loves to dance with his new wife, Zhana. In 1950, Alexander left London to live in Australia, where he began creating large artworks. He returned to England when commissioned by Parliament to produce a commemorative sculpture for the jubilee anniversary of Queen Elizabeth.
The artist also was commissioned by the Arts Council of London to produce a large monumental sculpture at the entrance to Nottingham Hospital. For the city of Leicestershire, he made a 60-foot-high bronze sculpture at Rutland Waters.
In 2007 Alexander's "The Cross" was installed at the entrance to Oaks Christian School.
